Wat is een duistere stadswandeling precies? - What is a dark city walk?
Toen we net begonnen, noemden we onze duistere stadswandelingen "Horrorwalks". Deze naam was eigenlijk niet goed gekozen. Mensen dachten dat er acteurs tevoorschijn sprongen om ze de stuipen op het lijf te jagen tijdens een wandeling. Dat is zeker niet het geval! Tegenwoordig noemen het dus een duistere stadswandeling. Je komt naast plaatsen waar het spookt namelijk ook langs gebouwen en plaatsen met een bloederige geschiedenis.
When we were just started, we called our dark city walks “Horrorwalks.” This name was actually not well chosen. People thought actors were jumping out to scare the crap out of them during a walk. That is definitely not the case! So nowadays they call it a dark city walk. In fact, in addition to places that are haunted, you also pass buildings and places with a bloody history.

Is er een gids aanwezig tijdens een duistere stadswandeling? - Is the tour guided?
Nee, een duistere stadswandeling doe je helemaal zelf op het moment dat het jou uitkomt. Jij bepaalt bovendien zelf het tempo. Het boekje is tijdens je wandeling als het ware jouw papieren gids. Daarom wordt dit boekje ook met liefde en aandacht gemaakt zodat je jouw duistere stadswandeling niet snel zult vergeten!
No, a dark city tour is something you do all by yourself at your convenience. Moreover, you set the pace yourself. The booklet is your paper guide during your walk. That is why this booklet is made with love and attention so that you will not forget your dark city walk easily!
Zijn duistere stadswandelingen voor iedereen geschikt? - Are the walks suitable for all?
Onze wandelingen zijn geschikt voor iedereen vanaf 12 jaar. Vanwege de soms nauwe straten en hogere afstapjes zijn misschien niet alle locaties geschikt voor mindervaliden en mensen met kinderwagens. Maar we doen ons best om rekening te houden met deze groep. In principe is het dus voor iedereen mogelijk om een duistere stadswandeling te doen.
Our walks are suitable for anyone 12 years and older. Because of the sometimes narrow streets and higher steps, not all locations may be suitable for disabled people and people with strollers. But we do our best to take this group into account. So basically it is possible for everyone to do a dark city walk.
Zitten er schrikmomenten in een duistere stadswandeling? - Are there scare moments in a dark city walk?
Nee. Een duistere stadswandeling is een stadswandeling langs gebouwen en plekken die een bloederige geschiedenis hebben en/of waar een spookverhaal of legende aan vastkleeft. Er springen niet ineens acteurs tevoorschijn om je de stuipen op het lijf te jagen. De minimale leeftijd hebben we gesteld op 12 jaar vanwege de lengte van sommige routes en de bijzondere plekken waar we komen. Een voorbeeld daarvan is het Red Light District in Amsterdam. Is jouw kind wel wat gewend qua lopen en niet snel bang? Dan mag een jonger kind uiteraard gewoon mee.
No. A dark city walk is a city walk past buildings and places that have a bloody history and/or have a ghost story or legend attached to them. No actors suddenly jump out to scare you. We have set the minimum age at 12 because of the length of some of the routes and the special places we visit. An example is the Red Light District in Amsterdam. Is your child used to walking and not easily scared? Then of course a younger child can come along.
Ga je ook bij locaties naar binnen? - Will you also enter buildings?
Nee. Een duistere stadswandeling komt langs de verschillende gebouwen en plaatsen. Je stadswandeling speelt zich dus buiten af. Is een locatie een openbare gelegenheid zoals een café, theater, kerk of museum? Dan kun je uiteraard wel naar binnen om een kijkje te nemen, mits deze locatie open is. Entreeprijzen en horecarekeningen zijn uiteraard niet bij je duistere stadswandeling inbegrepen. Sommige locaties, zoals musea, zijn wél gratis te bezoeken voor mensen met een Museumkaart. Dat maakt je wandeling natuurlijk nóg leuker! En een kopje koffie, een ijsje of een gezellige lunch is natuurlijk ook leuk. Ook op een plek waar het spookt!
No. A dark city walk passes by the different buildings and places. So your city walk takes place outside. Is a location a public place such as a café, theater, church or museum? Then of course you can go inside to take a look, provided this location is open. Entrance fees and catering bills are obviously not included in your dark city walk. Some locations, such as museums, do allow free visits for people with a Museum Card. Of course, that makes your walk even more fun! And of course a cup of coffee, an ice cream or an extended lunch are also very nice. Even in a haunted place!
Hoe lang duurt een gemiddelde duistere stadswandeling? - How long will a dark city walk take?
Een gemiddelde wandeling duurt ongeveer 2 tot 3 uur. Maar je bent natuurlijk altijd vrij om ergens wat te drinken, te eten of naar binnen te gaan. Geniet vooral van je stadswandeling en kijk ook goed om je heen. Je wilt al die mooie huizen, gevelstenen en andere bijzondere dingen toch niet missen?
An average walk takes about 2 to 3 hours. But of course you are always free to drink, eat or go inside somewhere. Above all, enjoy your city walk and also enjoy all the city you're visiting has to offer. You don't want to miss all those beautiful houses, gable stones and other special things, do you?
Hoeveel locaties doe je gemiddeld aan bij een duistere stadswandeling? - How many locations will you visit?
Gemiddeld doe je zo'n 15 verschillende locaties aan. Sommige wandelingen komen langs meer locaties omdat er gewoon heel veel over te vertellen is. Maar welke duistere stadswandeling je ook kiest: je komt in elk geval op genoeg plekken om een goed beeld te krijgen van de duistere kant van de stad!
On average, you visit about 15 different locations. Some walks pass by more locations simply because there is a lot to tell about them. But whichever dark city walk you choose: at least you will visit enough places to get a good idea of the dark side of the city!
Help! Ik ben de weg kwijt, wat nu? - Help! I'm lost! What should I do?
Onze duistere stadswandeliungen zijn volledig op papier met een duidelijke, losse routebeschrijving. Lekker offline dus! Maar, bij iedere stop staat ook het adres vermeld. Als je de weg kwijt bent geraakt of je bent een beetje verdwaald, dan kun je natuurlijk altijd op je mobiel Google Maps raadplegen. Geen telefoon bij je? Er lopen vast aardige stadsbewoners rond die je de weg willen wijzen.
Our dark city walks are completely on paper with clear directions. Nice and offline, in other words! But, at each stop the address is also listed. Of course, if you've lost your way, you can always consult Google Maps on your mobile. No phone with you? I'm sure there are nice townspeople walking around willing to show you the way.
Is er ook een app? - Is there an app as well?
Nee, maar misschien wel in de toekomst. Voor toeristen is een app misschien gemakkelijker, maar omdat we in een digitaal tijdperk leven houden we het voor nu juist bij papier. Lekker offline heeft ook z'n charmes!
No, but maybe in the future. We are aware of the fact that an app might be easier for tourists, but since we live in a digital age, we'll stick with paper for now. Being offline has its charms too!

Oh oh, de weg is afgesloten of opgebroken. Wat nu? - Uh oh, the road is closed or broken up. What now?
Dat is altijd vervelend, maar voor ons is het niet te doen om alle wegwerkzaamheden in de gaten te houden. We vragen je daarom om in dat geval creatief te zijn. Sla een andere straat in om toch op de plaats van bestemming te komen. Raadpleeg eventueel Google Maps als je de stad niet (goed) kent.
This is always annoying, but for us it is not possible to keep track of all road works. We therefore ask you to be creative in that case. Take another street to get to your destination. If necessary, consult Google Maps if you do not know the city (well).
Ik woon zelf in de stad waarvan ik de duistere stadswandeling wil doen. Is dit nog interessant voor mij? - I live in the city where I want to do the dark city walk. Is this still interesting for me?

Waarom staat de route niet op de website? - Wht can't I find the route on the website?
We geven onze geheimen natuurlijk niet prijs. Je moet dus zelf ervaren langs welke griezelige plaatsen en gebouwen wij de route hebben uitgezet. Alle verhalen zijn de moeite meer dan waard!

Kan ik een duistere stadswandeling ook in het donker doen? - Can I also do a dark city walk at night?
Jij bepaalt wanneer je jouw wandeling gaat doen, dus ga gerust na zonsondergang op pad. Houd er wel rekening mee dat sommige parkjes, steegjes en hofjes 's avonds gesloten kunnen zijn. Je kunt dan niet even naar binnen om te spieken. Denk daarnaast natuurlijk ook aan je eigen veiligheid.
You decide when to do your walk, so feel free to go out after sunset. Just keep in mind that some parks, alleys and courtyards may be closed at night. You won't be able to peek inside. In addition, of course, consider your own safety.

Nee, je betaalt dan maar 1 x € 29,50 met z'n vieren. We raden aan om één wandeling met maximaal 5 personen te delen. Wil je met meer mensen op stap? Dan raden we aan om meerdere wandelingen af te nemen. Zo kan iedereen de belevenis het beste ervaren.
One dark city walk can be done with more people, so you'll only need to order one walk of € 29,50. We recommend sharing one walk with a maximum of 5 people. Do you want to go out with more people? Then we recommend taking multiple walks. That way everyone can enjoy the experience best.

Wat zit er allemaal in mijn pakket? - What will I find in my order?
Eigenlijk houden we de inhoud van je pakket liever nog even geheim, maar je wilt natuurlijk wel weten of je waar krijgt voor je geld. Als je een duistere stadswandeling bij ons bestelt, ontvang je een doosje met daarin een verzegelde enveloppe. In die enveloppe zit jouw wandeling: een handig boekje met duidelijke foto's en verhalen over de plaatsen en gebouwen die je gaat bezoeken. Daarbij krijg je een losse routebeschrijving. Dit alles wordt geleverd met een handige, duurzame tas waarin je al je spulletjes kunt bewaren en een balpen voor eventuele aantekeningen.
Actually, we prefer to keep the contents of your package a secret for a while longer, but of course you want to know that you are getting value for money. When you order a dark city walk, you will receive a box containing a sealed envelope. Inside that envelope is your walking tour: a handy booklet with clear pictures and stories about the places and buildings you will visit. Along with it, you'll receive separate directions. Dit heeft alles te maken met de hele belevenis! Jouw ervaring begint eigenlijk al als de postbode langskomt. Je kunt ervoor kiezen de enveloppe vooraf open te maken, je kunt hem ook pas op het startpunt openen. Ook dat is helemaal aan jou!

Bij het uitzetten van een duistere stadswandeling komt meer kijken dan bij een gewone stadstour. Zo wordt er vooraf veel research gedaan over de geschiedenis van een stad. Daarnaast zijn er kosten voor het drukwerk en voor de hele organisatie van het proces. We kiezen bewust voor Nederlandse leveranciers. En je krijgt écht waar voor je geld want je bent na afloop niet alleen een ervaring, maar ook veel kennis rijker.
Plotting a dark city tour involves more than an ordinary city tour. For example, a lot of research is done in advance about a city's history. For shipping, we charge a standard shipping fee of €3.95 (in the Netherlands). For shipments abroad we use PostNL rates.

Is een duistere stadswandeling ook leuk om met de klas te doen? - Is a dark city walk also fun to do for schools?
Zeker! Nogmaals, een duistere stadswandeling is niet eng, maar wel spannend en vooral heel leerzaam. Het is daarom heel leuk om met schoolkinderen te doen. Vanaf groep 7/8 is een prima leeftijd. Ook voor middelbare scholen is het leuk: een keer een niet-saaie geschiedenisles in de buitenlucht! Wel adviseren we om de groepen klein te houden. Ga uit van maximaal 5 personen per wandeling.
Absolutely! Again, a dark city walk is not scary, but exciting and above all very educational. That is why it is very nice to do with school children. From group 7/8 is a good age. It is also nice for secondary schools: a non-boring history lesson in the open air! We do advise to keep the groups small: a maximum of 5 people per walk.
